DDR4 memory modules (including 3200MHz variants) are a highly sought-after commodity in the e-waste and precious metal recovery industry. As the standard memory generation for recent enterprise servers, gaming PCs, and modern laptops, DDR4 scrap is becoming increasingly abundant as IT asset disposition (ITAD) cycles refresh older hardware.
For precious metal refineries and scrap aggregators, DDR4 represents a steady, high-grade source of gold (Au), palladium (Pd), silver (Ag), and copper (Cu).
Precious Metal Yield & Material Composition
While newer generation RAM like DDR4 generally features slightly thinner gold plating on the edge connectors compared to vintage memory (like SDRAM or DDR1), it remains a premium, high-yielding category due to the density of the surface-mounted components.

Gold (Au): Primarily found on the 288-pin (desktop) or 260-pin (laptop) edge connectors (“gold fingers”). Gold is also recovered from the microscopic bonding wires inside the black BGA (Ball Grid Array) memory chips.

Palladium (Pd) & Silver (Ag): Extracted from the Monolithic Ceramic Capacitors (MLCCs) surface-mounted across the PCB.

Copper (Cu): High-grade copper is recovered from the internal conductive layers and traces of the multi-layer printed circuit board (PCB).

Aluminum (Al) / Steel: Found exclusively on modules that feature aftermarket or OEM thermal heat spreaders (heatsinks).
Scrap Sorting & Purchasing Categories
To maximize payout and processing efficiency, DDR4 scrap should be graded into the following standardized categories:
